Standard Rescue Intake Vetting

At the time of surrender or transfer of a pug to Georgia Peach Pug Rescue (GPPR), prior veterinary records are requested to identify gaps in the veterinary care of each pug. Pugs with no prior veterinary records will receive all components of the Standard Rescue Intake Vetting. While pugs are in foster, GPPR pays for all veterinarian expenses. In 2025, we spent $68,419 on veterinary expenses and medications (not including supplies) for 48 pugs, averaging $1,160 per pug. Standard Rescue Intake Vetting, which prepares the pug for adoption, occurs over multiple appointments. All veterinary tests, treatment, and medications MUST be authorized by GPPR prior to occurrence.

Prior to placement in their foster home, GPPR will take the rescue pug for their intake exam. Rescue pugs will receive (as needed):

  • Medical history review (if known)
  • Physical examination
  • Fecal to check for parasites
  • Heart worm test
  • Heartworm / flea / tick preventative
  • Recommended lab work
  • Vaccines: Rabies, Distemper, Adenovirus type 2, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Bordetella, and Lepto-4
  • In-office treatment or prescriptions to treat minor medical issues (e.g., ear infections, dry eye, allergies, etc.)
Following the intake exam, the foster home will obtain GPPR approval* to schedule an appointment to take their foster pug in for (as needed):
  • Vaccine booster
  • Microchip and registration
  • Spay or neuter procedure

Complex, non-urgent medical issues will be addressed at subsequent appointments. The foster home will obtain GPPR approval* to schedule an appointment to take their foster pug in for (as needed):

  • Diagnostics
  • Treatment
  • Surgery
  • Rehabilitation
  • Follow-ups

*Foster home must obtain approval from GPPR prior to scheduling to ensure available funding.
