Foster

We are a foster-based rescue, meaning that we do not have a facility and we rely on volunteers to open their homes and hearts to our rescue pugs while we search for their forever homes. Basically, there is no GPPR without good-hearted folks like YOU! We often have little notice when contacted regarding picking up a pug in need. Thus, we need to be prepared by having a list of approved foster homes we can check with when instances like these arise. For many shelter dogs, having a foster home available can be the difference between life or death.

GPPR pays for all vetting, such as (but not limited to) spays/neuters, vaccinations, heart worm and fecal testing, medical treatments, and medications. As a foster parent, you will only be financially responsible for food for your foster pug. Otherwise, you will simply provide routine care, similar to what you would provide to your own pets, such as:

  • Nutritious food and fresh water
  • Dispensing of medications
  • Love and attention
  • Exercise/socialization/playtime
  • Basic at-home grooming (brushing, bathing, etc.)
  • Helping learn basic skills (housetraining, basic commands, etc. as needed)
  • Encouraging good behavior through positive reinforcement
  • Ensuring the pug is kept inside and only allowed outside with supervision
  • Facilitating veterinary care (paid for by GPPR)
  • Submitting updates to the Foster Coordinator that will help us learn the pug’s personality in order to match them with their forever home.
  • Evaluating prospective adopter’s applications and home visit notes
  • Bringing the pug to Meet & Greets
    • While you are not required to attend every Meet & Greet, pugs who attend these events tend to be adopted more quickly. Meet & Greets are one of the primary ways potential adopters can meet the available pugs.
    • If you cannot personally attend an event, GPPR may be able to provide a volunteer to pick up and drop off your foster pug

As a foster parent, you have the option of taking an active role in the adoption process of your foster pug. You can contact applicants, check references, and even do the home visit if you are interested. Some fosters report that it is bittersweet when their foster pug leaves for its new home. Having a role in approving the perfect family and home for that pug helps considerably. Alternatively, if the foster home is interested in adopting the pug, and if the home is a good fit for the pug, our foster homes receive adoption preference and a discount on the pug in their care. Please note that you will still need to fill out an adoption application to adopt the foster pug.

Hospice Foster

Not all rescue pugs are deemed adoptable due to their age and/or medical needs. Hospice foster homes take in these pugs and allow them to live out the rest of their years, months, or days in a safe and loving environment. The individuals who open their heart and home to a hospice pug are truly remarkable. They recognize that their role is to provide the pug with an optimal quality of life for the duration of its remaining time on earth. GPPR will continue to provide vetting (e.g., vaccinations, heart worm and fecal testing, medical treatment, medications, etc.) to these pugs for the rest of their lives. Individuals are able to sponsor a hospice pug to support GPPR and the foster home in provision of care.

Foster Application

We recognize this application is thorough (a.k.a.) long. We want the best for the pugs that have been entrusted to us. The crazy people out there ruin things for everyone-it’s not you, it’s them. Please take no offense to the questions and answer as honestly as possible. A real, live human will be reviewing your application, and you can expand on anything you believe warrants additional conversations. Thank you for helping us save pugs!

Please note that this application has skip logic built in and additional questions may appear based on individual responses.
