Buddy

Buddy, age 5, came to GPPR on 3/11/25 after his family exhausted all resources trying to identify the cause of his rapid-onset glaucoma and lameness. Our vet noted that the glaucoma had caused blindness in both eyes, so we ordered a halo to help him navigate his foster home. The vet did x-rays and suspected blastomycosis, a systemic fungal infection, so drew labs to send off for confirmatory testing. She immediately called in a prescription for a compounded medication to start aggressively treating for blastomycosis. The compounding pharmacy said the medication would be ready for pick up the next day. However, early that morning, on 3/18/25, Buddy developed extreme respiratory distress. We took him to the emergency room, and he was placed in an oxygen chamber. His vitals were critically abnormal, and they feared he would go into cardiac arrest at any moment. After viewing his x-rays, they shared that his lungs were filled with spores. They did not believe that he would survive long enough for us to pick up the prescription, and certainly not the months it would take for it to begin working. We were devastated. Together with another board member, the hard decision was made to end his suffering. Buddy was held, rocked, and sang to in his final moments. He will never be forgotten.
